Organic Film&Theology (aka "Movie Night")

I like the idea. The communal abode is in preparation.

So, what's next?

I'd say Millions or The Family Stone.

I think I'm going to go buy Shopgirl so we can have a group viewing of that.

In Millions a young boy, who has visions of saints who're long dead, finds a bag of money that he believes is a gift from God that he can use to do some good. But he finds out that the money is from a source that is questionable at best and that his brother and everyone else who comes in contact with the money is consumed by it. I like this money because I think that rather than trying to characterize God as a specific role played by an actor, God is represented by his saints. And I don't simply mean those saints that the Roman Catholic church has canonized, but all of the poor and especially Damian; the boy around whom the movie is centered. This movie has beautiful images too. Danny Boyle uses wonderful visual effects for the transitions between scenes. And the villain is not so much characterized as a villain by superfluous and taxing monologues, but rather by the music that accompanies his arrival on screen.

The Family Stone centers around a family, named Stone, that gathers together for Christmas. The eldest son is bringing his girlfriend home to meet the family; and hopefully to get his grandmother's ring from his mother. Their some controversy among the family about the girlfriend because she is too "up-tight" for the laid-back family's tastes. There are some ancillary conflicts in the movie that are revealed throughout the course of the film, but it would be going too far into the plot to say something about it now. But there is a bit of dialogue at the end of the movie that I absolutely love. The girlfriend asks the mother, "'what's so great about you anyway? you're not so great.' 'no, we're not. but we're all we have.'"

And if you haven't seend The Royal Tenenbaums Nate, you jsut suck.

Grace and Peace,
Jared
